Four challenges for the century ahead
Climate adaptation
Tree populations may face temperatures and drought regimes outside the range to which they are locally adapted. Managers are debating when to protect existing communities and when to assist migration.
Fire
In some regions, warmer conditions, altered fuels, land-use change, and past suppression policies are contributing to more severe fire behavior. Cultural and prescribed burning are receiving renewed attention.
Biodiversity
Protecting old growth, dead wood, soil life, habitat corridors, and structural diversity can matter as much as simply counting stems planted.
Restoration quality
Planting trees can help, but a plantation is not automatically equivalent to a native forest. Species choice, land history, water, local livelihoods, and long-term care determine outcomes.
Cities rediscover canopy
Urban trees reduce shade temperatures, intercept stormwater, provide habitat, and improve streetscapes. Yet canopy is often distributed unevenly, making tree planting a question of public health and environmental justice as well as design.
A principle for the future
Protect ancient forests where they remain, restore diverse forests where they have been lost, and design new tree cover around the needs of both ecosystems and communities.
The long view
Trees have survived continental drift, ice ages, mass extinctions, new herbivores, new competitors, and changing atmospheres. But individual forests can still disappear quickly. Their resilience is real; it is not limitless.
The history of trees therefore ends with a paradox: forests are ancient beyond human imagination, yet their near future depends heavily on decisions made within a few decades.
